Suiter steps in at Hilhi for his first head job
Continued:
current Spartan players and program.
Plus, Drake moved quickly, hiring Suiter just a few weeks after Schmidt’s departure.
While the Spartans received four or five applications, Drake said he wanted to interview Suiter first. Once they did meet-on Monday-Drake offered him the job pretty much immediately.
“It wasn’t a rushed decision,” Drake said, “but
It made the most sense to us when we looked at the whole picture.”
Suiter, who lives in Tigard, is actually on his third stint with Hilhi.
He first worked as an assistant for about four years back in the 1990s, followed by a two-year run under Michiah Kasier, and now his current stay.
Suiter inherits a squad that went 6-20 overall in 2009-10, including a 3-11 mark in the Northwest
Oregon Conference, good for sixth place of the eight teams.
But only four seniors off that club are graduating, as the Spartans are set to bring back eight varsity ball players, including leading scorer and seniors -to-be Kelsi Thorud (11.7 points per game, second- team All-NWOC as a junior) and Alex Christensen (8.6ppg, honorable mention).
“I’ve been at it a long
time,” Suiter said, “I’ve been an assistant a long time, but I’ve learned a ton and have lots of good ideas. Now I get to apply them.”
Suiter will lead Hilhi as it makes the transition next year from Class 5A up to 6A and into the Pacific Conference.
“He’s really a guy that deserves this chance,” Drake said, “and I think he’s going to do a real good job for us.”
